Tired...

Posted by CommanderX1125 Jan. 3, 2009 @ 11:17 PM EST

Alright, surely I'm not the only one that has noticed this, but I'm almost certain the same crap that has been on the boards in the past has been reincarnated. Only thing that is really different is it seems a new generation of young folk have appeared to fill the ranks of the ignorant who either wised up and stepped into line, or finally trolled themselves into that gentle rest.

Anyway, I'm still lurking around, but I don't think I'll be saying much, as I don't feel like arguing the same points in an endless cycle of futility, as the ones who are ignorant won't change their stances, regardless of the evidence, and the ones that have the evidence don't need convincing. Essentially, I just don't see the need to preach to the choir anymore... I may be called to action every once in a while, but I think my posting days for the time being, are over. Granted if something comes up in Heathenry I'll be sure to participate if I have something relevant to add, and assuming someone will tell me that something has occurred.

As for recent events... There are so many, I just don't know where to begin, I'm not even sure if everything has played out yet so I think I'll continue my watch..

So, how was everyone's holiday and such?

In my attempt to improve the situation, I'm trying to be more of a moderator than a debator. Nit-picking small points that are out of line, rather than formulating my own argument (which of course itself would be overlooked for any small mistakes I might have made).

I think part of the problem is:
1.) The Mod Squad is disjointed. Some crack down on flame wars and repetiton, others perpetuate them. This makes "the line" blurred.

2.) New people follow the examples of old people. The old people who SUCK have done nothing but teach a new generation to suck, and suck better, harder, faster, and stronger, as is the way of things. In my own experience, asshole theists who go "lalalllalala" everytime someone questions their religion have created Shaggy, and asshole atheists who go "lalalalalal" every time a theist makes a post about why they believe have created Poxpower.

3.) There aren't enough smart people left to band together and make a friggin impact. Trolls rule the board, and the best any of us can do is back the troll who matches our view. "Yeah, they're trolls, but they share our views, so we're gonna ignore their crap debate skils and pretend like the opposition just don't get it".

Heathenry has me exhausted. I can't keep up, and I've not really the patience to find something new, or rekindle that type of debate.

IRL I'm chewing assholes out almost daily. Some listen because they see the wisdom behind it, others think I'm a big jerk. I don't really care either way, as I'm more bemused in my own ability to stomp morons than teach lessons.

Well, that was odd, why did all of part three disappear? I'll add it again...

1. Pox seems to be doing just that with Marco in a thread which I can't seem to recall right now. That thread is a perfect example of why I'm more or less taking a role of simple observer.

2. Yeah, I've noticed the next generation sucks more than I ever thought possible. The fail is strong in this group, and I can't seem to understand how that was even possible... I think we inadvertently proved evolution to an even more impressive degree.

3. I've noticed a few old guard kicking around, Rav is up still kicking ass and taking names but is less apt to do it from what I've seen. Elfer... I don't know about him... I've seen him but he doesn't seem so zealous in his pursuit of truth... I've seen you doing as you say, attempting to ref the fights/destroy people.... Mez goes unchecked for the troll that he is... I'm guessing the boards are boned, granted it was bound to happen, sooner than late but I was hoping it wouldn't be so soon.

As for Heathenry... Well, why bother at this point? In all honesty, I've not even come across anything worth saying there for a fair while, and all the "regulars" of it are more or less as active as I am at this point.

3. There are plenty of smart people, we just all happen to of come to the same conclusion of, "Why bother?" I think most, if not all of us are now jaded to such an extent with some people that we just can't bring ourselves to destroy them once more, even if they are too foolish to realize their own failure on the matter. As I've said in the past to many of my teachers when they have asked why I didn't try to correct various people when there were very well aware that I knew an answer, "Why try to change the mind of a zealot? The answer they always give will never be the right one, and it is a waste of breath unless you want to convince everyone else."

I don't dislike the boards. I believe there are some ignorant people around, but it is natural for them to be, since NG does not nit-pick intelligent individuals; as there are ignorants in everyday life, there'll be ignorants here.
I believe your distress comes from the specific sub-world of the politics forum you generally look at, the religion threads. In such topics, there are lots of strong opinions based on emotions well rooted in the individual, tracing back to one's childhood, that are very difficult, if not impossible, to manage and change. Therefore, one needs a mental preparation to face such subject, a certain scientific way of life, that college provides.
Economics, on the other hand, is a science easy to make analogies with, more close to one's life, and more beginner-friendly. I am quite happy with the level of the discussions being held in this forum (especially since the departure of you-know-who), and with the progress and interest some, eh "rookies", such as myself, have had in their debate skills, and scientific knowledge and understanding of the world. The emotion aspect related with religion also applies, but it is focused in the equity-efficiency aspect, and therefore, can be neutralized easily. Altough I must admit it is a recurrent, and usually futile to argue, topic.
I do not dislike ignorants, since I am one myself in many aspects of the science, but there are some arrogant ones that annoy me. Yet, it is not diffucult to put them in their place; the somewhat intelligent ones are much worse, since they have a somewhat valid point, and they will bloat about it, and ignore the major flaws in their argument (if there is one), or in their disrespectful attitudes to others, which is quite difficult to correct.

Onto holidays, they suck. They have only made me realize the major disfunctionalities of my family; my brother's psychological disorders have now increased exponentially with his puberty, and I am very afraid of what he may do, but mostly worried that I find no way to fix him and his attitudes.
But hey, the wise men brought me $100! w00t

*laughs* I'm well aware that ignorant people will be around, it would be even more ignorant to think they would not be here as well. My issue is the repeating of such ignorance which is emotionally based. I have my own biases, that goes without saying as we all do, but I'm willing and able to see that I'm wrong when given proof of it. True, most bias can never be touched, but being able to swallow ones pride when given proof to the contrary of ones beliefs should be a natural practice.

*sighs* My holidays were horrid, I essentially posted just how screwed up they were on Sevens page.

You have not missed much. There's an official obama thread , and probably one official Economy thread as well.
